Substitute Teacher

So I went to my guitar lesson and my normal teacher was out and they brought in a sub. Well this sort of pissed me off. I would have preferred some advance notice and probably would have skipped it if I'd have know. After taking lessons from the same guy for almost a year, it's pretty much a waste of time to bring in a new guy for one lesson because the Sub spends most of the time trying to figure out where you stand. By the time he gets to the point that he can make any useful assessment time is up.I am by no means a great guitarist, I'm probably not even an average guitarist but everything this guy tried to show me I already knew. The sub was pretty impressive when he played. He is going to Depaul and is a Jazz major. So after talking for a few minutes about where my current struggles are and telling him I already knew his tips we decided to just jam for a bit. We decided on a blues jam in A minor with him playing rhythm and me soloing away.ruh roe, the dog is loose.Ok back now. So anyway Mr. Sub was pretty impressed and to tell you the truth I was also impressed with my playing. I came out of the "lesson" with a whole new level of confidence and I have been jamming away in the basement for the last couple of days.If I could only eliminate the latency issue I am having with my recording software as I would like to record some stuff and compare it to where I am six months from now.On another note I've been reading "Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal" Very enjoyable stuff, brings back a lot of memories from High School as the book covers the "hair metal" era in pretty good detail. Certainly interesting reading for any Heavy Metal fan.

oh, geez - like no comment -

putting pick up "Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal" on the "TO DO" list this week

music slump WC? gee, I'll let you borrow my Pink Martini . . .

and Maraya wanting to change to the sax had NOTHING to do with your influence . . . Elleah's sudden interest in guitar . . .

maybe this is just some passive aggresive tone deaf thing on my part -

Well since you are one of 3 people who actually look at this blog I guess you are.

Well I have become a big fan of Andy Timmons as of late, he is all instrumental.

If you haven't heard the new one from Coheed and Cambria I would recommend that one. The are becomming more main stream though.

Other current bands that are getting good reviews you might want to check out are Witch (Witch) and MogWai (Mr. Beast).

Way back when, Accept (Balls to the Wall) was a rocker. You probably know them, if not check them out.

Loudness, another late 80's band that could kick ass. Never got a big following, probably because they opened for Stryper.

For fun, check out Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction. I can't remember the name of the album but it has a song called "Prime Mover" on it. Warlock had some interesting tunes, find the album with "All We Are" on it. Badlands was Jake E. Lee's band after Ozzy, another good choice.

That's what I got off the top of my head. Let me know what you think. You have probably heard all the 80's stuff I listed but if not give them a go. I know you are a Queensryche fan, but give me a feel for what you like and maybe I can come up with some more.

I only skimmed this article, due to the lack of Yngvie Malmsteen references (there can be only one).

If I went into everything that I like....well you would most likely block me from you blog and laugh for days...ok, weeks.

I have about 1300 good albums that if my turntable was hooked up are worth listing too.

I have the major '80s stuff with some thing like:
Bitch school
Saraya
Allman and woman
Warlord
Yesterday and Today
Krokus
and then we can get into the strange stuff.

Love:
Heavy Metal
early Punk
Blues
Southern Rock

Like:
Goth
later Punk
Euro Teckno dance remix
Irish Folksongs

Does the pain of this really need to go on?

heck, I was just thrilled to see Bahaus opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers - haven't heard them in like 15 years . . .

'course I am so like post-vinyl, have them on a pirated cassette . . .

OK, you can stop. Hell with that many albums + what can I come up with that you don't know?

Here is a must check out....

Tribe of Gypsies.

you did catch how DD#1 Maraya's name is like Saraya - right . . .

and Elleah is from that Donny Iris song - Ah, Leah . . .

I was young, he had a nice a$$, I just don't want to hear about it . . . ok?!

(and any resemblence to Star Trek characters on the middle names is purely coincidental)

TRIBE OF GYPSIES....
Why have I not heard of these guys before this???
The cover of Van Halen "Ain't talkin bout love" is better the the orginal.

Have you seen these guys live yet?

I have not seen them live. My cousin clued me in on them a month or two ago. He also suggests a band called "Down", I don't know anything about them. But might be worth a listen.

I will have to ask my Cuz where he found them. I haven't seen them at the local music stores either.
