Soccer has taken over Muskies or Metal

Been spending more time watching the World Cup than doing much of anything lately. I love soccer and actually went to college to play. Realized playing on a nationally ranked team that my dream of playing professional soccer wasn't going to happen. I was a goalkeeper and my freshman and sophomore years I backed up an all-american. He went on to play a few years professionally, it was obvious early how much better than me he was. I can't usually watch soccer on TV, but the World Cup is a different story. So I've been watching as much as possible on the weekends. U.S. sucked ass, bad strategy on Arena's part combined with bad defensive play was the problem. I don't believe that talent wise they are as bad as they showed, but you can't give up the ball in the middle of the field on defense and expect to win. Playing only one striker was just plain stupid. I think Brazil is by far the best team in the field when they play like they are capable, although they haven't shown it yet. Argentina looks good, Germany has been playing well in front of the home crowd. England has been playing well, also. They are going to need some more offense if they are going to do any damage though.

On the Metal side, I've been working on "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson. I can play most of it, but nowhere near up to speed. So I guess that means I can't really play it. But my guitar teacher has been pushing it as a way to work on my technique etc. I've been struggling along with that one.

Also, been working on "Fight the Good Fight", by Triumph. That one has some interesting pieces to it. I have always been a big Triumph/Rik Emmett fan. I remember trying to learn Fight when I started playing again about a year ago after the 18 year lay off. I couldn't get close to some of the chords and progressions. I figured it would be a decent gage of my progress so I brought it into my teacher. He couldn't remember the song, as he wasn't a big fan of the band, but we listened to the CD and he went nuts talking about what a great song it was blah blah blah. It has been going pretty well, but it still is a bit of a challenge for me. I am pretty confident that I will nail it down though, including the solo.

The older boy wants to go to Ozzfest. I am contemplating that one. That might be a bit rougher crowd than the Warped Tour and a wee bit more expensive.

Warped Tour 2006

At 9:00 am we started getting ready. 3 adults and 11 kids (14 year olds) were going to the concert/show/festival what ever you want to call it. Of course none of the kids or I gave any thought to bringing any water, sunscreen, sandwiches etc. Then again, when you think about it why would we, we were only going to be there for 10 hours and it was only supposed to be 95 degrees. Good thing Momma Musky was on top of things and put the cooler together while the boy and I were trying to figure out what bands we were going to see. Off we went with a warning from the wife the put on our sunscreen.....well at least one of use took her direction (thank god it was me).

We met the other two parents and the remaining seven kids and we made the hour drive to the concert facilities. The warped tour has a pretty decent set up. Two main stages, 4 sponsored stages and then about 5-6 small stages. The bands started playing at noon. The main stages would have a band play for 1/2 hour while the next band set up on the other stage. So it was pretty much non stop. Similar things were happening on the 4 sponsored stages and the small stages. In addition, each of the bands has a tent where you can meet them, get autographs etc.

We walked to the gate and were informed that you could only bring in opened water without the cap, so everything got left in the cooler in the car. I guess the organizers didn't want to miss out on everybody spending $3 for a water, $4 for a gatorade and $5 for a beer. It was 89 degrees and clear skies when we arrived.

Of course the kids ditched us old geezers immediatly with direction that they better answer their phones when we called. Much to our surprise they did, not that you could hear much. So me and the other dads decided to wander over and see a band called Greeley Estates. We didn't know much about them, but had heard the kids talk about them. Wow, they sucked ass. Screamers so we watched for two songs and headed back to the main stages.

I had told my boy and one of his buddies as we were driving up that they better pay attention to what was going on around them because I was going to slam them if I saw them. So as we were walking back to the main stage I saw the boy, ran up to him and leveled him. Hell it was supposed to be a punk rock festival.

Luckily for us old timers after about 2 hours of 90 degree heat, the wind shifted to come in off the lake and cool everything down.

It's been a while since I have been to a concert that had a lot of kids at it, but it was an interesting mix. You had the hardcore punkers with the mohawks, you had the straight laced kids, you had the kids that wanted to be punk but couldn't pull it off, the goths (who I'm sure hadn't seen the light of day in years) and then...the parents, most didn't seem to really enjoy themselves.

There were a few things that I saw (or didn't see) that surprised me during the day...
  1. Bands with horn sections, I wasn't expecting that. But a few bands had them. "Less than Jake" had a Sax and Trombone player, I guess they were SKA, whatever the hell that is.
  2. Bands with Harmonicas - yep there was one. They were on one of the really small stages and they sucked.
  3. Black people - I figured the punk scene was a white thing, but there were a few black kids. Although they weren't into the mosh pit or crowd surfing.
  4. Dope Smoking - didn't smell any dope during the whole show. That sort of surprised me. Actually didn't see any drugs and only a few really drunk people.
  5. Kids alone that couldn't have been over 10 years. Where the hell were the parents?
  6. No fights, 90 degrees, beer and a lot of people....but nobody really got out of hand. The worst that I saw happen was a security guy get hit in the face with a cell phone and a few kids get dropped crowd surfing.

I enjoyed most of the bands that I saw which included the following:

  1. Greeley Estates - sucked
  2. The Academy is - thought they were pretty good
  3. Less than Jake - enjoyed them
  4. The Casualties - couldn't stand them.
  5. Motion City Soundtrack - enjoyed them
  6. Senses Fail - They were pretty good, if you don't count their first song when the singer was way off key.
  7. Armor for Sleep - they were pretty good.
  8. Helmet - the heaviest band there (at least that I saw) I really enjoyed them. I am probably going to have to pick up some of their stuff.
  9. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - at about 50 years old she was a riot. Her performance was great and she still looks pretty good in leather. Actually she and her band were the only leathered up bands there.
  10. Aiden - More on them later
  11. Rise Against - They had one of the biggest crowds
  12. NoFX - They closed the show and sucked ass. When they actually played they were pretty good, but spent most of there time talking about drinking, drugs and hookers.

Aiden had probably the best set out of any of the bands I saw. My boy is a big fan, really makes a parent feel good when you kid loves satan worshippers (or so it seemed). I had listened to a few of the boys CD's of these guys, so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it. They came out and kicked ass. The other two dads and I were shocked at how much we enjoyed them. I guess two of the guys in the band graduated from highschool last year. Maybe they were good because I set my expectations sufficiently low.

The absolute highlight of the day was while we were watching Rise Against. We took our position towards the back. We wanted no part of any potential mosh pit action. About half way through the show, I'm scanning the crowd and I see my boy crowd surfing. He made if from about 30-40 rows back all the way up to the front of the stage where he was helped down by security. It was an absolute riot. I couldn't get the camera out quick enough to get a picture. Dammit!!!!!!!!!

So we left at around 9:00 am and got home about 10:00 pm and now Sunday night my ears are still ringing. No kids were hurt, but they all had a few bruises from slam dancing and crowd surfing. They are already making plans for next year. Hopefully they will let me drive again.

The Dirt on The Dirt....

Read Motley Crue's book called "The Dirt". Now I am not a huge Crue fan, but I do like some of their stuff. I picked up the book, all I can say is it certainly exceeded my expectations. Now, don't get me wrong it certainly won't win any literary awards but it was an interesting read.

The book covers the band members from Childhood through the reunion a few years back. The format is very interesting. Each "Chapter" is filled with each band member writing several 3-4 page stories (can't find the right word), that discuss a period of time for the band.

What a bunch of lunatics, they cover their serious drug addictions and the stupidity that went with it. A serious tale of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll excess. For example, Nicki Sixx covers a period when they were touring and met up with the guys from Cheap Trick. Apparently Nicki was a huge fan, and in a heroin and coke induced stupor pissed on one of his hero's. I mean really, you can't get that type of writing just anywhere.

Another interesting thing about the format is that as they are each discussing what was going on with the band you find out how they thought they were hiding their individual addictions from each other and the following "essay" will cover the fact that they all knew.

There is an interesting discussion about Nicki missing his grandmothers funeral because he was too high and his apparent guilt regarding it, and another interesting discussion regarding the time Vince spent in jail after wrecking his car while all boozed up and killing the drummer from Hanoi Rocks. None of the other band members went to visit him in prison because they were too busy getting high. I think I have used my maximum allowable uses of the word "interesting."

I am sure many people would dismiss this book because it is written by the Crue, but it is really well written (I am sure heavily edited). They don't pull any punches and give you a real behind the scenes view point of what was going on. Talk about a band on the edge. Sort of makes you wonder how any of them survived, although Nicki did flat line from a drug overdose. After being saved by paramedics checks himself out of the hospital and shoots himself up with heroin. During this he leaves a message on his answering machine along the lines of "Hi this is Nicki, I can't take your call because I'm dead."

I found it to be an enjoyable read.

Songs

Following is a listing of Songs that I can or at one point could play. Some I can play the solo and some I can't. Some I could grab a guitar and play right now, some I haven't played in so long I would pretty much have to re-learn them. Asterisk indicates songs I jam on at least once per week.

Van Halen
  • Ain't Talkin Bout Love*
  • Beautiful Girls
  • You Really Got Me
  • Pretty Woman
  • Running with the Devil
  • Best of Both Worlds (this one is a real pain in the ass for me. I have to constantly play it if I want to be any good at it - same with Panama forget the solos other than Running with the Devil, I can't tap for shit)
  • Panama
  • Black and Blue

Led Zep

  • Rock and Roll*
  • Black Dog
  • Over the Hills and Far Away
  • Stairway (Haven't played this one since before the fire and the 18 year lay off from the guitar, but I found the Tab for the Solo a week or so ago so I've been messing around with that. Not a tough solo but it is just constructed so well. Obviously one of the most recognizable solo's of all time)
  • Immigrant Song*(woo hoo, no solo in this one)

Ozzy/Sabbath

  • Crazy Train*(forget about the solo in this one. I can play some of the fills, I just play the rhythm that is under the solo when I get to it)
  • Diary of a Madman (another pain in the ass one that I have to keep re-learning. Randy Rhodes plays some pretty f'ed up chords in this one)
  • Paranoid

Rainbow

  • Since you've been gone

Quiet Riot

  • Metal Health*

Scorpions

  • The Zoo
  • Rock you Like a Hurricane

Sammy Hagar

  • One way to Rock (Great tune, but so damn easy it gets boring fast)
  • Heavy Metal* (I learned this one in the mid 80's before all my guitars burned, I've been playing again for about a year - for some reason I never forgot this one)

Pink Floyd

  • Another Brick in the Wall pt 2* (just learned this one, what a great solo. My fingers are killing me from trying to hit some of the bends that Gilmour has in it)
  • Money

Beatles

  • Day Tripper (I should learn more Beatles tunes)

Blue Oyster Cult

  • Don't Fear the Reaper

Poison

  • Nothin But a Good Time (C.C. hahahahahaha)
  • Talk Dirty to Me

Eagles

  • Hotel California

Coheed and Cambria

  • The Suffering*

Cinderella

  • Shake Me
  • Save Me* (another one I learned back in the day. The reason I haven't forgotten this one is probably because in has 3 chords in it)
  • Nobody's Fool

Tesla

  • Rock me to the Top (The only tune I ever transcribed myself. After that process I decided I would just buy the Tab)

Dire Straits

  • Sultans of Swing* (What a great tune. The Rhythm part is easy, the Lead has a ton of great licks in it. Don't have the whole solo down, but if I spent some time working on it seriously I would - I am beginning to love Dminor)

Metallica

  • For Whom the Bell Tolls
  • Am I Evil* (Can play most of the solo, haven't played it in a while. Love the Rhythm parts which I Jam to a lot)

Megadeth

  • Peace Sells

Stryper

  • The Way (what the hell was I thinking)

AC/DC

  • Have a Drink on Me
  • You Shook Me All Night Long

Boston

  • More Than a Feeling
  • Smokin

Doobies

  • China Grove

Green Day

  • Holiday

Judas Priest

  • You've Got Another Thing Coming
  • Livin After Midnight
  • The Green Manalishi

Iron Maiden

  • The Trooper (I should relearn this one. This one is a blast to Jam. I had it down about 6 months ago, but just stopped playing it. Maybe I'll go back and re-learn it then learn the solos)

Kiss

  • Detroit Rock City

Motley Crue

  • Looks That Kill (Fun tune, like a lot of old Crue)

The Monkees

  • Last Train to Clarksville (who cares if they didn't play their instruments, hell when this was produced session guys played on most albums)

Thin Lizzy

  • The Boys are Back in Town (I gotta relearn this one, it's fun to jam. Pretty easy so gets boring though)

U2

  • Sunday Bloody Sunday

The Surfaris

  • Wipe Out (Used to use this as part of my warm up, but after a while it just gets boring)

Paganini

  • Part of Caprice 24 (I think it is) converted from Violin to Guitar. (I use it as part of my warm up. If I don't play this one at least every other day I lose it fast - well even when I do play it daily I can't play it to speed)
